I hope you guys are already used to this whole ‘tween horror’ thing we’re dealing with right now because it doesn’t look like it’s going to let up anytime soon. Variety have word on yet another young adult book franchise being scooped up for movie adaptations.
Warner Brothers, who you may recall are capping off their HARRY POTTER franchise soon, are planning on getting right back into the mix of things. According to Variety the studio has secured rights to Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s BEAUTIFUL CREATURES. CREATURES is the first of a planned five novels in the franchise and WB has already tapped Richard LaGravenese to write and direct the film adaptation. This is getting ridiculous isn’t it? Guess we’ll just have to roll with it…
BEAUTIFUL CREATURES is about high-school student Ethan Wate, who meets and becomes bewitched by Lena Duchannes, a 16-year-old whose family has moved to the small South Carolina town where he lives. The two must confront a curse that has haunted her family for generations as she comes to grips with her powers. All kinds of teen supernatural fun ensues. Oh joy. Ready to get even more excited?
Director Richard LaGravenese’s past credits include FREEDOM WRITERS and P.S. I LOVE YOU. Not only does this mean we’ll probably be seeing Hilary Swank in this shite but apparently this is LaGravenese’s first time hitting the supernatural. Here’s what the writer/director had to say:
“I love supernatural stories that have well-drawn mythologies, and I liked that this book has all the basic elements of a classic first love story with a supernatural layer over it. So the first time they hear the words ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend,’ they accidentally overhear each other telepathically. Their first kiss comes after he saves her life, and their first date is part of a bigger adventure that leads to the unraveling of the mysterious curse that haunts her family.”
Now we’ll be keeping an eye on BEAUTIFUL CREATURES and hopefully deciding it has no place here at AITH. Check back for updates on the off chance this thing ends up looking pretty cool.
