Fred Dekker is the man! He created two of the coolest genre pics, with NIGHT OF THE CREEPS and THE MONSTER SQUAD. While neither film made a box office killing, they have been celebrated as cult classics, and deservedly so. I recently had the absolute pleasure of shootin’ the shite with Fred about the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release of the Directors Cut of Night of the Creeps (Oct. 27th). It seems to be getting the treatment that fans have been looking for including the original ending. And soon after that, you can look forward to the 20th Anniversary Edition of The Monster Squad (Nov. 24th) also on DVD and Blu-ray. Fred Dekker fans rejoice!
When we spoke, Fred and I chatted about everything from PARANORMAL ACTIVITY to why he hasn’t made another film after so many years, the reasons are ludicrous… somebody give this guy another project please! “Rob Cohen has actually talked about a MONSTER SQUAD remake, which I think is a terrible, terrible idea. Mostly because that particular arena has become so overdone by other people, that it seems completely unfresh. There is a show on Nickelodeon called “The Troop” which is a flat out rip off. There is “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”, there’s elements of Harry Potter… all that stuff that we did is already being done by a lot of other people so to me it is completely unfresh.”

“With [NIGHT OF THE] CREEPS, I’m actually hoping, because I want so desperately to work with Tom Atkins and Jill [Whitlow] and Jason [Lively], and particularly with Steve Marshall because he is really, really good and hasn’t had his day in court. Because I would love to work with those guys so much and because there is so much fan affection for the movie, I actually have been talking with Chuck Gordon. If we can sell enough DVDs, going to Sony and saying we can do the sequel ourselves. I think a remake of this movie would just be catastrophic.”
