You probably know who Stephenie Meyer is, whether you want to admit it or not. She’s the chick who wrote the TWILIGHT books… Yeah, that’s her. What you probably don’t know is that she actually wrote a slightly more mature non-TWILIGHT novel called THE HOST. Well guess what…. THE HOST is being made into a movie! Didn’t see that one coming…
Apparently producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have been after the rights to THE HOST for a while, hitting a wall everytime. Actually it seems this entire adaptation is centering around Meyer and her preferences. According to Variety the producers kept trying to persuade Meyer with ‘a significant offer, a strong vision for the project and a collaborative spirit.’ They even went out and hired Andrew Niccol to adapt the screenplay and direct!
Why Niccol? Well apparently two of Meyer’s favorite sci-fi flicks are Niccol’s GATTACA and the Niccol scripted THE TRUMAN SHOW. The producers want Meyer to stay a huge part of the adaptation and the creative decisions. So what’s the deal with THE HOST? Check it:
THE HOST is a love story set in the near future on Earth, which has been assimilated by an alien species of benevolent parasites that call themselves “Souls.” One such soul, the Wanderer, is fused with a dying human named Melanie Stryder, in an attempt to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth.
Alright then. Not very original but we’ll give it a shot. Keep it here for more on THE HOST as we hear it!
