DUNE is a classic sci-fi novel from author Frank Herbert way back in 1965. It was made into a film back in 1984 by David Lynch. There’s been various other releases based on DUNE. Novel sequels, TV mini-series, computer games and the like. But what about another flick? There’s been talk for a while of another DUNE adaptation and it seems it may not be too far off!
DUNE has been said to be impossible to adapt into a film. Obviously Lynch tried it and now Peter Berg wants his shot at it. The director recently talked to MTV about the upcoming adaptation and spilled a few details, mainly: It’s still happening! He talks about how there’s already a script from Josh Zetumer but that it’s almost 200 long, ‘a massive epic’ as Berg puts it. Berg even has thoughts of a DUNE franchise coming from this!
Right now Berg and company are trying to “figure out how we can beat [the script] into something manageable without offending the purists… filmmakers have struggled [in the past] because it’s a very complicated book to crack.” Really? Here’s something else Berg had to say that you might find very interesting: “My experience with the book was different than David Lynch’s experience or the people behind the Sci Fi Channel’s experience. I found it to be more of an adventure tale, more of a muscular action/adventure story. I think that’s my approach, not as an R-rated film, but as a pretty hard PG-13 film about a young man dealing with issues of vengeance over the death of his father and wanting some payback and having to come to terms with his destiny along the way.”
PG-13? Really?! And rumor has it Berg is looking at TWILIGHT’s Robert Pattinson for the lead role! Oh God what’s happening… Peter Berg directing a PG-13 ‘massivley epic’ DUNE adaptation with Robert Pattinson starring? I think I’m going to be sick… Hopefully I’m just jumping to ridiculous assumptions here… Let’s just hope for the best and be sure to keep it here for more on this DUNE flick as we hear it!
