I’m going to be completely honest before even getting into this story… I’ve never heard of the legendary German story FAUST. This article over at Variety make it seem like everyone and their mother know exactly what FAUST is… well I didn’t. After a bit of research I’m up to speed though and I’m here to tell you about FAUST!
Firstly, in case you’re in the same boat I was in, let me school you all on FAUST. It’s a German legend that basically boils down to a man who makes a pact with the Devil in exchange for knowledge. The man is ‘Faust’ while the Devil goes under the name of ‘Mephisto.’ Countless literary, artistic, cinematic, and musical works have been inspiried by the legend of FAUST and now you can add one more!
According to Variety director Oskar Roehler has been tapped to bring us an updated version of the classic tale for Tele Muenchen Group and its production subsid Clasart, and they’ve already tapped Moritz Bleibtreu to star as ‘Mephisto!’ Nice. This’ll be the fourth collaboration between Roehler and Bleibtreu (below), who you may recognize from stuff like SPEED RACER, MUNICH and DAS EXPERIMENT.
A couple more recognizable adaptations of FAUST seem to be the 1926 film (above) by F.W. Murnau and the 1960 flick from Peter Gorski. The simple plot of FAUST has all kinds of potential and I’d definitely love to see another updated take on the legend. It seems like FAUST is one tale that can keep being told in a countless number of ways… and it seems all kinds of messed up to boot! Keep it here for more on FAUST as we hear it.
