Just go wind of a new horror flick in the wings and its sounds pretty damn groovy. I’m talking about TALAL SELHAMI’s CARNIVAL OF ILLUSIONS which was pushed at this years CANNES FILM FESTIVAL. Synopsis: Liz, a eleven-year-old child deeply upset by her mother’s death, tried to commit suicide by slashing her wrist. Persuaded that a change of circumstances will do the little girl a world of good, Paul, her teacher-father, agrees at short notice to stand in for a teacher in a summer boarding school located in Alsace, a few miles from the German border.
However, once there, the place proves to be less friendly than hoped. Liz soon becomes the victim of nightmarish visions involving children her age who are morally tormented. Even more disturbing is the fact that she develops the ability to communicate with Thomas, a boarder who is in a semi-coma, whose voice reaches her through an old cocked hat that was in his stuff.
As the friendship between Liz and her young friend becomes ever more symbiotic, her father starts inquiring on the bizarre death of the teacher he is replacing. Thus he discovers that members of a travelling show of German descent were expelled from the neighbouring village after World War II, shortly before the locals themselves fled the place.
The truth about the murky past of the village of Kayswieller will eventually be revealed on the evening the parents arrive. Not all the characters will survive this fateful night when Evil unveils its true side, as well as the vile nature of its projects.
Selhami will be shooting his directorial debut, the thriller MIRAGES this summer and after that he’ll be wrangling CARNIVAL OF ILLUSIONS hardcore. More news on both projects when we get some!
