“It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own.” Does that line offend you? I could see why, perhaps. What if you were watching an evil ORPHAN spouting the same line? Would you be able to discern that it is merely coming from a movie and isn’t in fact supposed to be interpreted as fact? Or would you possibly blow things out of proportion and start some sort of witch hunt?
I’m referring to a recent report that adoptive parents are really pissed off about Warner Bros. upcoming thriller ORPHAN, specifically the aforementioned line that appears in the flick’s trailer (which you can view right here). The parents are claiming that the movie perpetuates the longstanding fear/myth that adopted children are “damaged goods” and may very well be “evil”. Yes, you just read that correctly. What the plaintives are basically saying is that a horror movie will dissuade people from adopting children and giving orphans good homes.
Warner Bros. has since issued an apology, stating that they “messed up” and will re-edit the trailer to remove the line. I honestly don’t want to delve too heavily into my opinion regarding this manner because no foster child should ever be denied a home, but if a grown adult is willing to let a friggin’ movie tell them how to run their life, then perhaps that adult wouldn’t make a very good parent anyway. I mean, if ORPHAN gives adopting children a bad rap, then does the upcoming flick GRACE scare away people from having their own biological children? Okay, that’s all I’m saying.
