Red Light for Bioshock

If you’re like me and you were excited for Gore Verbinski’s BIOSHOCK then I’ve got some very disappointing news for you today via Variety.

It seems BIOSHOCK has been put on hold from here on out. Why? Money of course! Universal are running low on the cash it seems because they’ve put a halt on BIOSHOCK’s production and even fired some of the production staff! The picture was all geared up to shoot in Los Angeles but was escalating to a 160 million dollar budget! (Not billion… that’s JUSTICE LEAGUE. End sarcasm.) So Universal and Verbinski are looking to cut costs wherever they can, maybe even moving production to London.

From what I can tell from Variety’s article is seems Verbinski may not even be down for moving shop to London, stating: “We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit. We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern.” Apparently Universal and company, including Verbinski, are determined to make this film. Well that’s a good sign considering this one had some major potential!

Universal seem deadset on comparing this situation to ROBIN HOOD and not HALO. ROBIN HOOD had to also halt production at one point due to financial woes but eventually righted itself and looks to be one the way. HALO on the other hand is buried six feet under. Time will tell which category BIOSHOCK falls into but let’s hope this thing gets made! Keep it here for updates as we hear them.
