A reality check of the world’s economic situation slapped horror fans in the face yesterday as word hit the street (via Variety) that Fox Atomic, the genre arm of 20th Century Fox and distributor of such films as 28 WEEKS LATER, is officially going to be closed down, i.e., taken out of commission, put to rest, or in the words of the films it produced, thrown in the meat grinder.
While it’s always a bummer to see a company that was all about horror flicks go under, the question we have to ask ourselves is… what does this mean for us fan? Well… nothing, really. 20th Century Fox will now release the film’s Fox Atomic had on its shelf for distribution (including September’s JENNIFER’S BODY), and film’s Atomic had in development will move to development at Fox.
One “good” thing to come out of this is, according the report, one of the films that will move into development at Fox is 28 MONTHS LATER, a continuation of the zombie series. Finally! Confirmation that a 28 MONTHS is actually in the works. Though it’s not official that Fox will continue with the project, it is one of the properties that they’re absorbing, so let’s keep our fingers crossed it moves to the next level.
It’s been real, Fox Atomic. We fans appreciated your efforts–too bad you didn’t have bigger hits on your hands, or you may still be around. Now excuse me while I go cry myslef to sleep. Look for JENNIFER’S BODY, realeased by Fox, September 18th.
