It’s no secret that Sam Raimi is about to start work on a fourth installment to a popular franchise… but it’s not the Part 4 us genre fans are waiting for! Of course Sam Raimi is soon going to be hard at work on SPIDER-MAN 4 for a Summer 2011 release… but after the travesty that was SPIDER-MAN 3 I could care less about this franchise… I want EVIL DEAD 4!
I’m sure most genre fans out there will agree with me, regardless of how mainstream SPIDER-MAN is. As you might recall, last month Bruce Campbell himself pretty much smashed any hopes of an EVIL DEAD 4. Well according to IGN Sam Raimi feels differently…
IGN recently caught up with Raimi at the SXSW. Now of course the director talked about SPIDER-MAN 4… yawn. He also talked about EVIL DEAD 4 and the EVIL DEAD remake! And that’s what I’m here to talk about today! Now mind you…. we don’t have much news at all. Actually there’s no real news. But I find Raimi’s response to Bruce Campbell’s recent EVIL DEAD 4 talk pretty interesting. Here’s what he had to say:
“I liked Indy 4. He’s [Campbell] probably just trying to get out of getting in shape! Like any movie it’s hard to say if you want to do it or if you don’t want to do it until there is a script to talk about/ So one day I hope to have the time to write a script, and if that happens I’m hoping that Bruce will change his mind.”
So Raimi would still like to work on an EVIL DEAD 4 script. When is he just going to admit he’s too damn busy with this whole superhero thing to get to EVIL DEAD 4? The man is going to string us genre fans along for years and years it seems… how many of you out there have straight given up on the potential sequel? Well one thing we might actually have a chance at seeing sometime soon is th EVIL DEAD remake.
IGN also asked Raimi about the remake in which he responded:
“I have talked with my partners about having a young director come in and remake Evil Dead. That film was made in 16mm on a shoestring budget and blown up to 35mm. The visual effects are crumby, it was done in mono, not even stereo, let alone 5.1. What you could do with it now would be so much better. I think if you had a new director using the full power of 35mm and 5.1 sound, you could really make a pretty socko presentation. It was always meant for the big screen, but never really seen on the big screen”
So it looks like Raimi just wants to see his baby brought back to life with today’s technology. Hmm. Now the question is: Is that a good thing? One of the reasons EVIL DEAD is such a classic horror flick is because of it’s gritty feel. Do we really want to change that?
