Genius cult movie director Frank Henenlotter, he of classics such as BASKET CASE and the brilliant FRANKENHOOKER, spoke recently to Fango. With his latest film, BAD BIOLOGY, completed, Mr. H. was asked by the folks at Fango what his possible plans may be for the future. And one particular piece of info he revealed towards the end really got my bolts buzzing. Here’s what he started out with:
“I don’t know what will happen next. I am not anxious to make movies just to make movies. The situation has to be right, as it was with BAD BIOLOGY. I was left alone on that, and I had free rein. But if I have to tone my stuff down and make a mainstream film, aim for an R rating and let the hero and heroine win, then I don’t know if it is worth doing. I guess we’ll wait and see.”
That’s why you just gotta love a filmmaker like Henenlotter. It ain’t about the money or the studio or any bothersome outside influences. He’s only in it to tell the creative story that HE set out to build. That’s the real deal. F*ck all the other posers. Now onto my favorite part of the interview.
The topic of horror remakes came up and Henenlotter was asked how he felt regarding the subject. Check out what he said: “I have had people asking me about FRANKENHOOKER. I cannot say I’m thrilled at the idea of a FRANKENHOOKER remake, but if someone was to throw enough money at me, I think I would probably take it and say, ‘Well, who cares? My version still exists.’ ” Ha! The man even makes contemplating becoming a poser sound cool!
