Whether we like it or not, there’s an I AM LEGEND prequel on the way. There’s been talks on a LEGEND sequel ever since the absurd success of the first film. Those talks quickly turned to prequel talks. Star Will Smith and director Francis Lawrence jumped aboard and the project quickly came to fruition.
Personally I didn’t mind I AM LEGEND. Will Smith’s performance was spot on, nearly extraordinary. The visual effects were nothing short of amazing – let me repharse what I mean: The scenary effects were nothing short of amazing. Yet I still preferred the book. Now we’re getting a prequel. Will Smith is on. Producer Akiva Goldsman is game. Director Francis Lawrence is set. The three of them are just waiting on D.B. Weiss to finish a script based on a vague idea that the four men came up with. Basically the prequel will center on the time just before the first film, when humanity starts dying thanks to the virus. So it looks like Smith won’t be going it alone this time.
SciFi Wire recently sat down with Lawrence to talk a bit about this LEGEND prequel. Lawrence touched on what he was aiming for with the first film, the time frame in which he would like to start this prequel and the story for the prequel among other things. Here’s a bit of what he had to say:
“…and I think that to go back, there has to be a truly viable reason to go back into that world that I think interested everybody, so that’s the real struggle. The struggle is to find a story that brings us back in a way that’s hopefully just as interesting as the first time around.”
Head right over here to read up on the rest. Well that’s reassuring. At least we know they’re not just jumping into this thing to make some fast cash. Hopefully we’ll be treated to a more vicious type of infected this time too… perhaps actual vampires like the book? I doubt it.
