The Camp Crystal Lake countdown continues! As of tomorrow, we will be exactly two months away from February 13th 2009 and the remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH’s release date. With Jason’s re-invention closing in, it doesn’t really surprise me that the notion of a sequel has already come up. I mean, they did one for the TEXAS CHAINSAW remake (which is from the same production company, Platinum Dunes). They’re doing one for the HALLOWEEN remake. I guess it just makes sense.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, there isn’t any official announcement regarding a sequel already in the works for the FRIDAY remake. Here’s what Dunes producer, Brad Fuller, said to set the record straight: “No, we aren’t talking about the sequel until we see how the movie performs. We would love to do a sequel and we hope we are in a position to do a sequel, but you never want to test the ‘Movie Gods’ and the movie going audience by preparing something, until you know what you have is successful. With this one, we made a movie that we are all very proud of, it’s the most fun I have had on a movie. I really love it, I hope the audience responds, and we get an opportunity to make another one!”
Okay, so that’s what Mr. Fuller had to say. Here’s what I believe he was thinking during that response: “Hell yeah, we’re doing a sequel! Are you kidding me?! Jason is a household commodity and you know we’re going to have a huge opening weekend! We’ve already got a guy working on the script!” Of course there’s no way for me to actually prove this, since I’m not a trained mind reader. But my guess is a sequel is inevitable. My only question is, since this current remake is retelling FRIDAYs 1 through 3, will the next one retell 4 through 6? They’d probably withdraw part 5, though, for obvious reasons… or maybe not. Who knows?
All I can say for now with complete certainty is that I am definitely looking forward to 2009’s brand new Jason.
