While on the surface, this story is about a retelling of an old tale via a classic poem. But really, it’s a way to rip-off the great Stephen King’s 30 year epic of Roland the Gunslinger and his quest for the Dark Tower. Darkstone Entertainment and director John Johnson, the same duo behind the PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE remake, are in cahoots again to bring THE DARK TOWER to life… with a twist.
The twist? This is NOT based on King’s epic story, but based on the original source material, the poem by Robert Browning (“Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came”). See, that’s where the rip-off begins. Sure, it’s technically based on the original poem, but King is probably more associated with Roland and the Dark Tower than anyone else on the planet. Weak!
According to Johnson, I’ve had an obsession with a dark tower in my dreams since I was five years old. Guess it is time to face it in the best way I know how. Are you freakin’ kidding me?
Johnson’s DARK TOWER is a very dark gothic story of a man and his quest to the mysterious Dark Tower set in modern times. Very much in the genre of horror our hero Roland travels through the world of dreams and nightmares to find his lost love and the Dark Tower. Well, put it that way and it’s nothing like King’s Dark Tower series at all! Wow, thanks Johnson! Your new interpretation is going to do wonders! Sheeesh!
THE DARK TOWER is scheduled to be Johnson and Darkstone’s next project after PLAN 9, which is scheduled to be released on September 9, 2009. Hopefully something horribly wrong will happen and they won’t be able to make this movie at all. We can only hope.
