Let’s face it. SAW V was basically a big-time letdown. From the lack of surprises (a large infraction) to having a character speak to himself in order to explain plot points to the lackluster ending (a HUGE no-no), the entire production left me unfulfilled. And the is the first time a SAW flick ever did that to me.
Nonetheless, despite the wide range of flaws, SAW V did turn out some damn fine numbers–upwards of $30 million in its first weekend. Through the law of theatrically-released horror flicks, that all but guarantees a sequel. And yes, there’s already been tons of talk about SAW VI greeting us come next Halloween. However, Bloody-Disgusting appears to be the first to actually confirm this news, stating that Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures are currently working on the screenplay with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton for Saw VI with plans to shoot the film for its regular October release in 2009. As for now, Tobin Bell is the only star already on board with Kevin Greutert as director.
The only reason why I would consider this good news is that it can give the filmmakers a chance to make up for their sins committed with part V. I’ll start the brigade right now: Dear Mr. Dunstan and Mr. Melton, I thoroughly enjoyed the work you did on SAW IV, however SAW V totally dashed my hopes for the series. Please, think long and hard with your new screenplay for part VI and give the fans a satisfying conclusion to the SAW franchise. We didn’t deserve the way we were treated with SAW V. Thank you.
