HALLOWEEN DOUBLE FEATURE
There’s nothing better than getting creeped out on Halloween night—and what better way to bring on the creepiness than by watching a double feature filled with bugs and slugs! Think of this double feature as warming you up (CREEPERS) and sending you home happy (SHIVERS) before, during, or after your Halloween festivities.
Start the evening off with Dario Argento’s unsung classic CREEPERS (aka PHENOMENA), starring the lovely Jennifer Connolly and HALLOWEEN veteran Donald Pleasance. The flick’s about a chick who can talk to bugs and uses her abilities to talk with a certain breed of corpse eating maggots. Why? To help catch a killer on the loose with a fetish for keeping its rotting corpses close by, of course.
Not only does Argento serve a well-crafted murder mystery / slasher flick, he also serves a platter of nasty bugs (maggots and flies, oh my), a razorblade monkey, and a mutated little boy that will give you… the creeps! The only downfall? Its lack of nudity… especially considering the majority of the film is set at an all girls private school. What’s up with that?
NOTE: While I prefer the title CREEPERS to PHENOMENA (what can I say, it’s a classic!), CREEPERS is actually the heavily edited American version of PHENOMENA; thus, be sure to pick up Anchor Bay’s recently released DVD of PHENOMENA and avoid the toned down CREEPERS version at all costs.

After you’ve been thoroughly creeped out by the bugs in CREEPERS, slap in your bootleg DVD / VHS copy of David Cronenberg’s debut feature film SHIVERS (aka THEY CAME FROM WITHIN) for some serious slug / parasite action that will give you… the shivers!
Where CREEPERS lacked in T&A, SHIVERS throws you in a tub overflowing with it, as the parasites / slugs transmit themselves to their human hosts through sexual contact, which means the horny inhabitants of this sky-rise apartment building have no chance of making it out alive! It’s a mix between a zombie flick, an exploitation orgy flick, and a social commentary on the dangers of STDs.
But mostly, it’s a flick that inspired the likes of other slug-filled epics like NIGHT OF THE CREEPS and SLITHER. And who else could deliver sex crazed ‘zombies’ than Cronenberg? Gold! The highlight? The bathtub scene featuring slugs, nudity, and even some lesbian action—also, pay attention to the beginning, as the doctor and his nurse have quite the working relationship…
You want the creeps? You want the shivers? You’ll find them both on Halloween night with this double feature! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
