May I be one of the first to say that there will be at least one very well-received flick coming out of After Dark’s third offering of HORRORFEST next January? I know the annual scary movie festival has now become somewhat notorious for offering a majority of flicks that fail to stir up much praise (like UNREST, THE DEATHS OF IAN STONE, CRAZY EIGHTS, LAKE DEAD, and WICKED LITTLE THINGS to name a few). However, I feel that DYING BREED has a damn good shot at breaking the stereotype and bringing HORRORFEST the dignity it deserves.
A bunch of brand new pics from the film have just been released. You can see one up top, one below, and the rest here. Yes, these images do appear to be quite frighteningly icky, but that isn’t the sole reason why I feel BREED has the balls to really bring it. First off, it’s coming from Australia and I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: “Australians know their horror!” Also, the plot may delve into wilderness-dwelling cannibals, but it has an interesting and original spin to it. Have a look:
A Zoology student, her partner, and her partner’s friend get lost in the vast forests of Tasmania and are subsequently hunted by a breed of mutants with a taste for human flesh who also are direct descendants of the murderous cannibal Alexander Pearce (aka “The Pieman”).
We’ll see on January 9, 2009 (when HORRORFEST begins) whether I’m correct regarding BREED’s quality. It was directed by Jody Dwyer, who also wrote the script with Michael Boughen. It stars Nathan Phillips, Sally McDonald, and Leigh Whannell (SAW).
