I could have titled this article ‘Smith on Red State,’ but I think one has been used about six or seven times since he mentioned he would be doing a horror movie called RED STATE awhile back–probably close to about a year now. The problem is, he keeps talking about it and not making it happen, so we have a ton of stories about Smith on RED STATE. Sadly, this is one of those news stories… but at least the title’s different!
Smith sat down with AICN to chat up all sorts of things while out promoting the hilarious looking ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO. In that conversation, the status of RED STATE came up… and here’s what Smith had to say: I’m still trying to find money for Red State, though, admittedly, I haven’t been looking that hard yet, since it’s not something I’m gonna get to ’til March the earliest. Early prospects, however, look dim. Problem is, the flick is bleak. Beyond bleak, even. Remember how bleak Dark Knight was? This flick makes the bleakness level in that flick seem Beverly Hills Chihuahua bleak. Sadly, while the flick’s bleaker than Dark Knight, it’s also not nearly as good as Dark Knight. Or as commercial. Or commercial at all, really.
Oh man, things aren’t looking for RED STATE, are they? If I had $20 million lying around, I would totally fund Smith’s movie! But I don’t. But someone should! A bleak horror flick from Smith sounds about as awesome as it gets–not only because it would be something different, but that it would be a horror movie from one of the biggest movie / comic book geeks of all time–tell me that doesn’t ring awesome!!!
