Punisher / Payne rated

The MPAA have been busy with this week watching violent movies based either on comic books or video games–nice to see those soccer moms are getting some variety in! Both PUNISHER: WAR ZONE and MAX PAYNE scored their ‘official’ rating yesterday, and I must admit… I’m shocked (to some degree) about both of them!

First up, PUNISHER: WAR ZONE. Thanks to the MPAA, WAR ZONE has been smacked with a sweet smelling R rating for pervasive strong brutal violence, language and some drug use. The only thing missing here is some sex… then again, that would’ve have been welcome in a PUNISHER movie, so kudos to them for leaving it out (though a strip club scene would be appropriate)! Why am I slightly shocked? Because there were reports awhile back saying that WAR ZONE might go the PG-13 route… and I’m so glad they didn’t!

The other rating we have is for MAX PAYNE, the video game adaptation featuring some killer action sequences and hardcore violence. The MPAA granted it a PG-13 rating for violence including intense shooting sequences, drug content, some sexuality and brief strong language. Maybe I’m crazy, but that description feels way more hardcore than WAR ZONE, and yet it gets a PG-13? Maybe it’s not as hardcore as the trailer lead us to be. Why am I shocked? Because it seemed like R rated material. Then again, as we saw with HITMAN, even if it’s rated R, it can still suck ass.

There you have it! PUNISHER is R on December 12th! PAYNE is PG-13 on October 17th! Get ready for some violence this fall!
