Remember back in August, when Robert Englund dropped the hot word that Billy Bob Thornton was in talks to be the new Freddy Krueger?
Of course you remember. This news took genre fans for a loop and we didn’t know what to think or how to feel… it was weird. Thornton is a fantastic actor… but as our beloved Mr. Krueger? It just seemed… I don’t know what it seemed.
Well last night I tuned in to Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and one of his guests happened to be Mr. Thornton. Well, the subject of whether Thornton was playing Krueger came up almost immediately and Thornton shot down the rumors. He said he’d heard that rumor and it went nuts over the internet. He also said he was ‘honored’ that Robert Englund would mention his name as a plausible choice for Freddy Krueger.
Of course Billy Bob might just be blowing smoke up our asses here. It’s no secret that actors don’t like talking about whether or not they’re doing roles until they’re signed and the news is announced… so I’m not counting Thornton out until we hear from Platinum Dunes who’ll be putting on the fedora for the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake. As soon as we hear anything on NIGHTMARE, we’ll update you.
