UPDATE: We received word straight from Lorin Wood that this was NEVER considered as the look of Gort. Here is his response: My name is Lorin Wood and I am responsible for that concept art that AICN posted regarding the Gort design. The illustration was done for fun and has nothing whatsoever to do with the film. I worked as a previz artist on the movie and myself and a co-worker decided to come up with some iterations in our spare-time. AICN did a google search, found my webpage and the sketch (which was not associated in any way with my work on the film) and extrapolated that it was an “official” piece of work… that is a personal sketch, nothing more. And there you have it! Never a contender… but cool anyway!
The boys over at AICN scored some early concept art of Gort from Scott Derrickson’s THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL remake hitting theaters this December. As seen in the film’s traier (which you can check out below), there’s a brief shot of Gort, looking to be based on the original film’s design of a boxy, bulky robot from the 50s.
But what could have been? Concept artist Lorin Wood came up with a different take than the Gort we all know and love–a take that was ultimately rejected. Still, it’s cool to check out what could have been. Can you imagine Gort looking like anything else?
With this piece of art, yes… I suppose you can. But could it have worked? Doubtful. Good choice by all to stick with the original design… enjoy the trailer for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL below, and get ready to follow Keanu Reeves as Klaatu in theaters everywhere December 12th.
