With Platinum Dunes’ upcoming rehashing of FRIDAY THE 13TH coming to the big screen sooner than you’d think, one has to wonder how original series creator and director Sean S. Cunningham feels about the whole thing.
Lucky for us, Fangoria recently sat down with Cunningham to discuss the whole thing, and truth be told… he seem pretty excited for it. Here’s a snippet of him describing his part in bringing the remake to the masses:
One day, someone woke up and said, ‘Excuse me, do you know that Jason is [barely] in the first FRIDAY THE 13TH?’ And so, suddenly, the project became not a remake of the original but a sort of recombination, something new. So the difficult job was to create a movie that seems to be the remake of the first film, but it’s a kind of synthesis between parts one, two and three. But it has to be a good work of synthesis in order to be accepted by the fan base.
And you were worried it was gonna be a full blown remake (with the exception of Jason, who was only in the original all of 3 seconds). Cunningham basically confirmed what we already knew, but it is interesting to see that they slapped Jason into the remake to get around the ‘rights’ issue with Paramount. Those sneaky bastards!
