Just the other day, my man Eric broke the news here that HOSTEL: PART III was indeed in the works. Now, just a couple of days later we have word on a possible writer/director and, big surprise, it ain’t Eli Roth.
Rather, it’s Scott Spiegel who actually produced both HOSTEL and HOSTEL: PART II. Keep in mind that this isn’t for certain yet, however the folks over at Bloody-Disgusting claim they learned from a very “reliable source” that Spiegel was in “serious talks” for the job. Considering his close work with the first two, as well as his long list of genre credits from THE EVIL DEAD to 2001 MANIACS, Speigel does seem like a logical choice. All I’m really wondering is…
Does Eli Roth factor in at all with any of this? When are we going to hear from Eli? As of now, nothing has been stated regarding whether or not he’s involved. The man had made it pretty clear, though, that he was through with the HOSTEL franchise after PART II’s timid reception. Personally, I still feel that Roth is an innovative force for the genre. I really enjoyed the first HOSTEL and thought the second was a very worthy, well-crafted effort. If he’s not involved at all creatively with PART III, I really can’t see it acheiving anything worthwhile beyond direct-to-DVD status. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
