My favorite genre in the world of horror has to be the stalker/slasher/revenge flick. I’ve enjoyed countless incarcerations from HALLOWEEN to HIGH TENSION to THE HILLS HAVE EYES. To me, it’s the perfect genre to tackle over and over again… if done right! Take this current flick looking to make a stab, called DEPRAVITY. It’s basic, heard-it-before plot bleeds simply like this: A loving couple on a weekend getaway find themselves stranded with a family of depraved killers.
So you’ve got the regular, everyday citenzens on a weekend trip, you’ve got the typical family of psychos, you’ve got both parties crossing paths… so where’s the incentive to give a shit? Well, it’s RIGHT HERE in the flick’s writer/director C.M. Downs! Word on the street is that this bloke bleeds all things horror. He’s already got several short films in the can and is looking to breakout big time with DEPRAVITY. From a recent interview at Dread Dentral, he appears perfectly poised creatively to offer horror fans something done right!. Have a look:
“One of the things I want to achieve on this film is the slickness of the original Hitcher, but with the gore of a Fulci film like The Gates Of Hell,” Downs said. “I mean to have hardcore FX on this film. That’s why I brought FX master Toby Sells to the table. He knows exactly what I’m trying to achieve and we see completely eye to eye on the visual aspect of a horror film. We have 15 pages of FX shots that are all practical. I’m sure Toby and the boys [at Creature Makeup FX] are gonna have their hands full.“
Sounds good to me! Downs already has a handful of actors attached to the project, including character actor Brett Rickaby (ZODIAC), Candice Afia (GREY’S ANATOMY), and Kurt Hanover. Plus, there is a shot that the lovely Kristina Klebe (ROB ZOMBIE’S HALLOWEEN, below) will be taking the co-lead role. And as an added bonus, Cameron Romero (George’s son) just got on board as a producer, so it seems that Downs has a lot to feel good about. I mean, how could you miss with a poster tagline that reads, ”Bring a barf bag…” Shooting is set to start later this year. More to come.
