Looking back, I have always found it interesting that Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn signed up and did THE CELL, as it’s quite the departure for both of them, in terms of their ‘normal’ kind of movies. Smart move on both their parts, especially Lopez, as there’s a group of people out there who still consider THE CELL to be her best movie.
So it was quite the disappointment when it was announced some time ago (check it out HERE) that THE CELL 2 was in the work and J-Lo wasn’t involved. Nor Vaughn. Nor Vincent D’Onofrio. Nor director Tarsem Singh. But the biggest disappointment? The sequel was scheduled to be a straight to DVD release.
After eight years, what’s the point of releasing a sequel STD? Changing the cast and the director may have been the most cost effective move, but as the final product will likely suffer, what’s the flippin’ point?
IMDB recently scored a brief synopsis, and it’s definitely sounding… interesting. Check it: The Cusp is a serial killer who kills his victims and then brings them back to life; over and over again; until they beg to die! Maya is a psychic investigator who gained her powers after a 1 year coma after she was the Cusp’s first victim! Now the Cusp Killer is back and Maya has little time to do what she has never done before, go into the mind of a killer unprotected, and save his latest victim.
Tessie Santiago stars as the film’s leading lady Maya, with Chris Bruno, Frank Whaley, and Bart Johnson along for the ride as well. While this Cusp character has a lot going for him, I’m curious to know how he brings back his victims from the dead… is it a FLATLINERS-like scenario, or something totally off the wall out there?
With Singh off the project, the flick’s directed by Tim Iacofano, who has directed episodes of 24 and ‘Smallville,’ but has yet to direct a full length motion picture.
