Ten years ago or more, James Cameron was my favorite director of all time. Before TITANIC, I knew the man had something to offer audiences that no other director could create. I love THE TERMINATOR and TERMINATOR 2. ALIENS is by far my favorite of the series, and TRUE LIES delivers on what may be Schwarzenegger’s biggest and most funnest (that’s right, most funnest) action ride yet. Hell, even PIRANHA 2: THE SPAWNING has its moments. Then there was TITANIC, and then… nothing. More than ten years of nothing from Cameron has knocked him out of my favorite director’s seat… but he may be back at the top as his next project, AVATAR, is looking to blow everyone away.
Cameron spoke at Microsoft Advance ’08 convention, and was able to discuss AVATAR, what we can expect from the experience, and what mind-bending and ridiculously cool things AVATAR will be able to do. Here’s a brief snippet of what he had to say:
The experience of ‘Avatar’ will be an experience unlike any other movies… ‘Avatar’ is the single most complex piece of filmmaking ever made. We have 1,600 shots for a 2.5 hour movie. It’s not with a single CGI character, like King Kong or Gollum. We have hundreds of photo-realistic CG characters.
Essentially, Cameron’s saying that this movie will change the face of filmmaking as we know it, and you know what… I believe him! He also goes on to say that every movie he makes from this point forward will be using this same technology, and will all be shot in 3-D. That I like! Although, if he makes a movie every 12 years or so, maybe that won’t be so cool after all.
