A couple months ago, Jared last updated you here on a slick little revenge flick called RED. Well, after a nice run at the Sundance Film Festival and some high-praise hype, Magnolia Pictures (THE SIGNAL, SEVERANCE, THE HOST) is looking to pick this puppy up. And if all goes well, we could be looking at a release date as early as this spring! That is sweet news! Want to know why? I can answer that question in two shots. First, the plot:
An old man (bad-ass Brian Cox of THE RING & X-MEN 2) goes in search of justice and redemption after his closest friend and important inspiration for living, his dog, is brutally killed by three troubled teens.
And second, it’s based on a novel by Jack Ketchum! That man is currently making a killing in the genre community with already two other well-received adaptations, THE LOST and THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, on the scene. And I’m guessing with RED, he’ll have himself a friggin’ horror hat-trick! Here’s what the man had to say to Fango after catching RED at Sundance:
“I’m three for three. Like the other two films, RED doesn’t compromise, though it’s the most mainstream of the three films. I’m very happy with it. Brian Cox sat next to me at the screening, and he has been acting for 50 years. He turned to me, kind of nervous, and said, ‘It really is good, isn’t it?’ ”
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. The flick was adapted by Stephen Susco, and directed by Trygve Allister Diesen with Lucky McKee (MAY) having a co-director credit. In addition to Cox, it also stars Kyle Gallner, Tom Sizemore, Shiloh Fernandez, Robert Englund, Amanda Plummer, Kim Dickens, Richard Riehle, and Ashley Laurence.
