I will now be going for the cult movie news trifecta! Here’s a juicy little tidbit on the ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES remake, which Jared first told us of here. Apparently, the new flick’s directing duo, Doug Sarine and Kent Nichols, have some pretty lofty dreams in terms of their would-be cast. Observe what the pair had to say during a recent interview with Bloody-Disgusting:
“It’s a bit early to talk casting,” Sarine said, “but we REALLY want George Clooney to be in it and we have a role in mind for Bruce Campbell as well!”
HAHAAA! That was my feeble attempt at a sarcastic laugh. I mean, sure, Mr. Clooney was in 1988’s RETURN OF THE KILLER TOMATOES (above) and he did kick-ass in 1996’s FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, but since then I think it’s fair to say that his “Hollywood status” has grown just a tad. As for Bruce “THE CHIN” Campbell (below), perhaps there is a slight chance that Sarine and Nichols could coerce the genre legend into making an appearance, but their vision for this version of TOMATOES had better be exceptionally fresh.
Maybe there is hope, though (for the movie, not Clooney). Here’s what the two said regarding their scope for the flick: “We have already written some of the big sequences, where it is essentially a massive massacre,” according to Nichols, “[There will be] waves of blood and smashed tomatoes, but in the context you don’t know which is which, and we plan on pushing the envelope to do this. But were not going to hack off a guys limbs, but hey… you never know?” Sarine added, “I love the idea of the crime scene and the detective tasting the red goo to decipher if its tomato of blood, just to get to the point where you can’t tell the difference between the two.”
Sounds somewhat promising. Personally, I feel that a remake of ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES is ripe for the picking! Yes, that was my last lame “tomato word-play” reference! Good night!
