It’s no secret that there’s been a METAL GEAR SOLID movie in the works for years, ever since the groundbreaking title hit Playstation 1. AITH even reported on it over a year ago.
That was the last we heard on any rumbilings of a METAL GEAR movie. Well that changes now. Apparently Columbia Pictures might just have a writer/director all lined up!
ComingSoon.net recently had a chance to chat with producer Michael De Luca about his upcoming projects, one of them being METAL GEAR SOLID. Now that the writer’s strike is over the project is apparently moving forward. De Luca and the studio are looking to meet with Kurt Wimmer about writing, and possibly directing, the video game adaptation.
Wimmer is the man behind films like EQUILIBRIUM, ULTRAVIOLET, and THE RECRUIT. So you think he’d be good behind the camera for a METAL GEAR film?
METAL GEAR SOLID is one of my all time favorite video games, the second kicked some major ass too. After Solid Snake started sporting gray hair they lost me though, but that doesn’t mean the Playstation 1 game wasn’t awesome. What exactly might we be seeing in a METAL GEAR movie? A new story? A remake of the NES game? The Playstation 1 game? Who knows. IGN reminds us that METAL GEAR creator Hideo Kojima had this to say back in 2004 in an interview with Variety:
“Things one can express in a game are different of those in a movie. It would have to be a very different script, almost a different story.”
I guess it could all be up to Wimmer. Personally I want to see a movie based on the first Playstation game, that story rocked and would really own as a film. Now that this project is finally moving forward, we’ll keep you updated on any news.
