Welp, it’s official. To go with the reports from the other day, Variety is reporting this morning that a third UNDERWORLD is going to happen.
UNDERWORLD 3: THE RISE OF LYCANS will be directed by Patrick Tatopoulos, with Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy and Rhona Mitra all on board to star. Sorry folks, no Kate Beckinsale… but as we now have the plot synopsis, you can see why her character wouldn’t even exist in part 3’s world.
Prequel story traces the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires known as Death Dealers and their onetime slaves, the Lycans. In the Dark Ages, a young Lycan named Lucian (Sheen) emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, Sonja (Mitra), in his battle against the Death Dealer army and his struggle for Lycan freedom.
Basically, it’s a period piece. With vampires. I can dig Nighy, and let’s face it… Rhona Mitra is hot, so score there! Previous entries director Len Wiseman will be on board as producer, and had this to say on the latest entry (and the new director) in the franshise: “For the first time we will experience the ‘Underworld’ universe through the eyes of the Lycans. Patrick has always played such an essential part in helping to create ‘Underworld’ from the start. … So I feel it is both exciting and fitting that (he) now takes the helm.”
Awe. The passing of the torch. How sweet. Tatopoulos was the f/x dude behind much of the previous UNDERWORLD creature effects, so at least we’ll know the f/x in the third film will likely rock our socks off.
No word on when they’re looking to release, or when filming is expected to begin, but I smell a winter 2008 debut… we’ll just have to wait and see on that one. UNDERWORLD 3: THE RISE OF THE LYCONS… yay or nay?
