A few weeks ago the boys over at B-D reported that music video director Sam Bayer was signed up to direct the upcoming remake of NEAR DARK. Today The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the news, as it looks like Bayer and all of his music video skills will be directing the ‘new’ flick for Platinum Dunes and Rogue Pictures.
However there is one change from earlier reports, as we had originally heard that Matt Venne was writing the new screenplay, based on Eric Red’s original script. That does NOT seem to be the case anymore, as it actually looks like Christopher Landon is taking a stab at the new script. Landon is the mofo behind this year’s surprise hit DISTRURBIA, as well as this year’s craptacular BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE. So basically, the guy’s a bit uneven, let’s hope this falls into one of his ‘hit’ categories, because if it’s ‘crap’… well, let’s not even contemplate it going there.
I’m not happy that they’re remaking yet another Eric Red movie (what’s next, BAD MOON?), but I can at least hope they do a decent job. As it’s the guy who directed Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like the Team Spirit’ music video (among others), then I have faith that it might not be all crap, then again THE HITCHER had the same similar potential… so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Stick around for more on the NEAR DARK remake as we hear it!
