I heard about WRESTLEMANIAC a while ago and I immediately registered it as a flick to watch. Well if your in the same boat I am, there’s some great news rolling in. While Revolver Entertainment already has the film available in the UK, it was without a release here in the US, until now.
Anchor Bay have just announced that they’ll be releasing WRESTLEMANIAC sometime in March to coincide with the popular wrestling event WRESTLEMANIA. Now the only tie in would obviously be the subject of wrestling, but even so, WRESTLEMANIAC doesn’t seem to have much to do with wrestling, so it seems a little off. Writer/director Jesse Baget had this to say to Fangoria on the subject of getting picked up:
“I’m thrilled Anchor Bay is releasing WRESTLEMANIAC in the U.S. They’ve distributed so many of my favorite horror flicks, like DEEP RED and the EVIL DEAD series, so it’s a great honor.”
According to IMDB, the plot to WRESTLEMANIAC is: On their way to Caba San Lucas, the cast and crew of a low-budget film get lost and come upon “La Sangre De Dios”, a ghost town with a spine-tingling legend about an insane Mexican wrestler. The leader of the pack and first time director, Alphonse, likes the town’s gritty appearance and decides it would be the perfect setting for his film. The crew positions the camera and snaps on the lights. When Alphonse yells “Action!”, it arouses the famous and now insane Luchador, “El Mascarado” (The Masked Man), who begins a game of his own. One by one, the cast and crew are snatched, beaten and dragged to a bloody death. The few left alive must figure out how to beat the wrestler at his own deadly game, or die trying.
The film has had two other titles, one being EL MASCARADO MASSACRE, and since the other title was THE MEXICAN PORN MASSACRE, I’m assuming the ‘low-budget film’ mentioned is of the adult variety, and seeing how it involves the females seen below, that can only be a good thing. As formentioned, WRESTLEMANIAC was written and directed by Jesse Baget and stars Rey Mysterio Sr., Irwin Keyes, Adam Huss, Leyla Milani (below), Margaret Scarborough, Jeremy Radin, Catherine Wreford, and Zack Bennett. You may recognize Leyla from that show DEAL OR NO DEAL, where she is one of those amazingly beautiful briefcase girls. WRESTLEMANIAC is getting the DVD treatment sometime in March 2008.
