Following the tail of yesterday’s news regarding SWEENEY TODD (check that out HERE), Variety announced today that TODD will be heading for a December 21st release, and is, in fact, expected to receive an R rating. Damn straight!
Yesterday’s report claimed that Warner Bros. wanted the film to be rated PG-13, asking for director Tim Burton to cut down the scenes of savage gore. That doesn’t seem to be the case today, as Paramount/ Dream Works look to be calling the shots, with the WB only having distribution rights overseas. Maybe the talks were discussing cutting it down for it’s international release? Maybe it was just a rumor… either way, it appears as though both Paramount and DreamWorks are expecting it to be rated R, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that!
Originally slated for a limited release on December 21st, going wide on January 11th, the studios realized they will likely have a hit on their hands after checking out some early footage. With Burton and star Johnny Depp together again, what did they expect? Of course it’s going to be a hit!
Stick around for more on TODD, and enjoy this brand-new poster for the flick, featuring Depp and his handy razor blade! SWEENEY TODD hits theaters everywhere December 21st.
