It’s Cannibal News Day!
Every once in a while I’m lucky enough to promote something or someone that I truly dig, and I’ll take that opportunity now to encourage you all to get yourself a Cormac McCarthy book. The man’s a great author, the best around right now as far as I’m concerned, and maybe his most cinematic novel, THE ROAD, is finding its way to the big screen, with the help of scribe Joe Penhall. It was announced a while back that director John Hillcoat would be involved, and if you’ve seen his somber, bleak western THE PROPOSITION, and if you’re familiar with McCarthy’s vivid prose, you’ll know its a fantastic match.
Why should you care about THE ROAD? Do you like post-apocalyptic cannibals? ’nuff said. More descriptively , THE ROAD takes place in a world that has undergone almost complete devastation: the sky is forever overcast, the forests are burnt to a crisp, there’s no food in sight, and the only people you seem to meet are packs of beyond-depraved heathens who would like nothing more than to eat you. Our lead character is a nameless father who takes his son down an endless road south, in the hope that anything better than the current hell they live in exists there… Yeah, it ain’t a barrel of laughs, and it won’t be your average “horror movie” by any means, but make no mistake, the story is as creepy and unnerving as anything you’re likely to read this or any other year. Hopefully the film will follow suit, and I’d definitely recommend putting this one high on your radar…
