When I was a young chap, I vividly remember a little movie called THE YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, as it featured all sorts of freaky shit people would imagine, right before their untimely deaths. Like, this one dude thought a tiny fly gargoyle was on him, so he stabbed at it… when it was on his chest. Or better yet, the scene near the end when the fat kid thought a whole tray of cupcakes, twinkies and other pastries came to life and wanted to eat him! Yes, it’s a classic in it’s own right…
Which is probably why this news is so exciting! According to Variety, Neil Marshall (THE DESCENT, DOG SOLDIERS) has signed up to direct SHERLOCK HOLMES, based on the upcoming comic book series by Lionel Wigram, and written for the screen by Michael Johnson.
Marshall. Sherlock Holmes. Watson. Count me in! It looks like Warner Bros. wants to take HOLMES in the same direction that they took BATMAN BEGINS, as a kind of ‘re-imagining’ of the character. They’re also wanting this to be an action/adventure like flick, focusing on Holmes skills as a bare-knuckle boxer, and an expert swordsman. With Marshall on board, we can only hope there will be some sort of ‘scary’ situation for Holmes to deal with, whether he’s solving the case of a serial killer, or people are seeing man-eating cupcakes before they die.
Either way, anything Marshall gets behind is golden to me, so bring on the HOLMES! He’s currently filming DOOMSDAY for Rogue Pictures, so HOLMES will be the next directing gig after that one wraps. The big question now: with Marshall behind the camera, who will play Holmes ON the camera? Stick around as we hear more on the SHERLOCK HOLMES front, and do yourselves a favor and rent THE YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES. It’s awesome.
