It must be that time of month again (no, not that ‘time’, ladies). Tartan has graced our presence with another round of Asia Extreme releases for this Fall. First up is British director Mark Duffield (oddly enough) and his feature-film debut GHOST OF MAE NAK, which will hit DVD shelves October 10th.
Based on a famous legend in Thailand, the film tells the story of a pair of young newlyweds who acquire an old abandoned house in Bangkok that soon brings them into contact with Mae Nak, a vengeful spirit of horror and despair. While Mae Nak’s ghost protects the couple from unscrupulous visitors, it soon becomes apparent that she expects a terrible favor in return. Only by setting Mae Nak’s spirit free will the couple have any chance of surviving her deadly wrath. As is the case with Tartan nowadays, they’re keeping the extras hush-hush for now, but what is known is that the film will be presented with a Thai language track with English and Spanish subtitles, an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS Surround Sound 5.1 and include the theatrical trailer as well as the usual trailers for upcoming Tartan releases.
Next up is a Korean take on a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale called THE RED SHOES, which will kick it to shelves October 24th. Written and directed by Yong-gyun Kim, the story revolves around a woman named Sun Jae, who catches her husband poking around with another woman. In retaliation, Sun Jae takes her young daughter and moves into a dilapidated old apartment building to start a new life. Heading home from work one day she finds a strange pair of high-heeled red shoes and decides to take them. While the shoes provide her with some comfort, they also become objects of unhealthy obsession for her ballet-dancing daughter and her best friend. Soon, everyone who comes into contact with the shoes desperately craves them and a curse that began hundreds of years ago will once again rear its ugly head.
So far, specs for the DVD include a Korean language track with English and Spanish subtitles, an anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS Surround Sound 5.1, with the theatrical trailer as well as the usual trailers for upcoming Tartan releases.
