Movies based on true stories, especially those that involve a really horrific crime that goes unsolved for almost 50 years, aren’t exactly my idea of a good time. While they serve in some ways as a reminder of the past, to think that something like this actually happened isn’t exactly all that comforting.
Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release one such movie, Ulli Lommel’s BLACK DAHLIA, on October 10th (not to be confused with the Brian De Palma film currently in production. Based on the very real unsolved case of The Black Dahlia murder in 1947 (hit up CrimeLibrary’s excellent, yet gruesome article here), a killer is loose in LA brutally killing and dismembering women in a similar fashion to the The Black Dahlia. For a rookie cop, the investigation leads him into a frightening lair of death and torture, all part of a terrifying fantasy that the killer is trying to bring to life.
The DVD will arrive with an anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1. Extras for the film include an audio commentary with Lommel and cast, and trailers. Retail price is set for $26.98. And for those wondering, yes, this is the same Ulli Lommel who directed ZODIAC KILLER, B.T.K. KILLER, GREEN RIVER KILLER, KILLER PICKTON and CANNIBAL, all of which are based on real-life crimes.
