Interesting news in Variety today for the subset of genre fans that also love musicals. I usually just refer to that small group as me. Anyway, it looks like Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are set to pair up again with a big screen version of Stephen Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD.
Each of them has seen another project face significant delays in the past week, so time has opened up for the birth of what would no doubt be a very twisted take on an already twisted tale. Also known as THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET, SWEENEY TODD features a psychopathic barber who starts slicing and dicing his customers. His sympathetic neighbor then helpfully chops the unlucky folks up and serves them in her meat pies which suddenly become very popular.
And people think that musicals are only for pussies. The show itself is bloody as hell and darker than most of the horror remakes coming out these days. Add Burton and Depp to that mix and I’m looking forward to SWEENEY TODD getting off the ground quickly in a major way!
