Oh man, here we go again.
The guys over at Horror-Movies.ca got a chance to attend the Cinema Wasteland show in Cleveland this past weekend, and among the news that they brought back was word that Anchor Bay is once again going to release THE EVIL DEAD to DVD for the 5,478th time (just kidding).
At the festival was Tom Sullivan, who when asked by the H-M crew what projects he had on the go, told them that Anchor Bay was going to re-release the film, this time with a brand new transfer and a miniature version of the cabin from the film. As well, there’s word that Peter Jackson would be involved with this edition, putting together a ‘tribute to EVIL DEAD’ feature that may be included in the set.
Now, this version has been on the rumour boards for quite some time, and now with Sullivan (who did the makeup effects for the film) saying that he’s been at work on the miniature pretty much makes this a go. No word, however, on what other extras (if any) would be on this set, or if Anchor Bay was going to carry over the extras from the Book Of The Dead Edition or not, or include the extras from the EVIL DEAD Boxset that Anchor Bay released in the UK.
Now, as much as I love EVIL DEAD, I have to ask: is this really necessary? I mean, according to DVD Aficionado, Anchor Bay has released 7 versions of the film, including the 2-pack with Book Of The Dead II Edition of EVIL DEAD 2 (not including the cover variants of one issue). Despite the BotD Edition’s Sam Raimi-approved transfer, they’re going back again, probably to remove the hard-matted transfer that in all respects ruined some of the film (and completely cut out the Band-Aid joke). Will this transfer be better than the long out-of-print Elite version of the film (which is a much better transfer than Anchor Bay’s)? We’ll see.
