We don’t talk music much on the site but this is special (to me anyway). Who
remembers progressive metal band Queensrÿche? I used to be a huge fan
and even saw them in concert once with Metallica (fun times).
Well they’re back with a sequel to their gripping, political, bleak and
ahead of its time 1988 concept album Operation: Mindcrime
which told the tale of a junkie who gets manipulated by a shadowy
figure named Doctor X into killing
corrupt public figures. There’s of course a woman
(ex prostitute now Nun Sister Mary) that
gets stuck (and killed) in the middle.
Distributed by Rhino Records OPERATION: MINDCRIME II
(Available on April 4) is a 15-song story that continues where the
original album left off with the junkie coming out of jail to take revenge
on Doctor X and the people responsible for the death of his girl.
And that’s not all, a rock/theatre tour is also upon us. Singer and
chief songwriter Geoff Tate says: “The band
plans to launch a tour in 2006 that will feature a stage performance of both
Mindcrimes in their entirety. “The actors on stage with us add a new
dimension to the music,” he says. “It’s different than your typical rock
show, but the audiences really got into the Mindcrime I tour. It’s exciting
to have the opportunity to combine both albums into one show. It’s going to
be epic.”
