Just to prove once again that movie studios can be dicks, Oded Fehr tells Moviehole that for the upcoming sequel to THE MUMMY will not have his Ardeth Bay character returning to aid Brendan Fraser in keeping his one-note career afloat.
“I’m not involved [in “THE MUMMY 3″]. The person that wrote it, created it, tells me they’re doing a third one. They were writing it [when I spoke to him], so I don’t know where it is now. I believe it’s only going to involve Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s characters, of the old movies, and everyone else [in it] is going to be new.” While you’d think Fehr would be disappointed, he apparently isn’t, since it’d mean having to grow his hair long for the part if Ardeth Bay was required back. “That was a lot of work – a lot of hair product, effort, and shower time. It’s a lot quicker now [that it’s short]”, he says.
With regards to Rachel Weisz, Fehr believes that Universal will be having a tough time getting her to return after her Oscar win. Then again, since Halle Berry starred in CATWOMAN after MONSTER’S BALL, anything’s possible these days. As for Fehr right now, he’s currently attached to the new RESIDENT EVIL sequel.
For THE MUMMY 3, Universal initially were toying around with the idea of having only Arnold Vosloo, the Mummy himself, return for the new sequel – and have it set in contemporary times, with a new hero. The most recent script however, sees Fraser and Weisz’s characters return, but with their grown-up son, to help fight off the undead Egyptian. It’s set in 1940, several years after the events of the first two films, with a new Mummy, China’s first uber-Emperor Qin Shihuang. Let’s see The Rock try and get in on this one.
