Probably one of the great tragedies in horror has been the decline of the once-great HALLOWEEN series. You could say the same about other series, but they’ve been making strides to improve on the previous film. HALLOWEEN…just seems to continue to get worse.
With the rumoured remake of the first film by the Weinstein Co. and the 9th entry in the series, Splatter Container had a chat with Dante Tomaselli (SATAN’S PLAYGROUND, THE OCEAN, which happens to have The Arrow himself in it!) about his possible involvement in HALLOWEEN 9, which would totally nullify the opening paragraph. When asked how Dimension Films got ahold of him, Tomaselli stated that it was the assistant to Malek Akkad (son of Moustapha Akkad) that got the ball rolling. In fact, even prior to getting in touch with Akkad, the glory that is the internet started it, with message boards and online petitions calling for Tomaselli to set The Shape back on the right track. “But nothing is concrete,” says Tomaselli. “I just basically threw my name into the hat of directors being considered for the film”.
Elsewhere in the interview, Tomaselli says that while he was a fan of the first two films, the sequels weren’t scary, even saying that HALLOWEEN 3 was more like INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Obviously Tomaselli isn’t knocking the classic, but unlike peanut butter and chocolate, those two tastes just don’t taste well together. If he were selected to direct, Tomaselli says that he’d like to do what the fans of the series wanted since the last sequel: bring back Jamie Lee Curtis the right way, along with possible cameos by PJ Soles and John Carpenter himself! Damn, hopefully Dimension listens to the fans (for once) and brings Tomaselli onboard, and makes Michael Myers scary again, unless Dimension wants to have Myers in space (or even worse, speak).
