The Johnny Butane gang (aka Dread Central) had a little chat with Lionsgate with regards to the upcoming North American release of Neil Marshall’s THE DESCENT and the rumours surrounding the ending of the film.
For those not up to speed on the situation, here’s the deal: When the film was screened at Sundance, Marshall remarked that he wanted to see how the audience would react with a different ending to the film (which did not show up on the R2 DVD release of the film, if you’re wondering). Since then, rumours have spawned rumours. Now, Lionsgate confirmed that the ending shown in the UK theatres and DVD will not be in the North American release. There’s no word on the incorporation of some of the deleted scenes from the UK DVD (notably the relationship between two of the characters), which were cut for pacing reasons. How this new ending will affect the overall film is beyond me, since I haven’t seen the film, which has been called one of the best horror flicks in recent years (Neil Marshall’s previous film DOG SOLDIERS kicked my ass all over the place).
The North American release of THE DESCENT is set for August, which will make the summer that much more enjoyable, with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2 and A SCANNER DARKLY (which looks to break my brain just like WAKING LIFE did) in tow.
