WHEN A STRANGER CALLS ruled the box office this weekend, pulling in a better than expected $22 million. I smell sequel (WHEN A STRANGER REDIALS??)
I could very easily lament the fact that once again a questionable remake has outperformed expectations at the box office, thus guaranteeing more of the same, but instead I’ll talk about the neighbor girl. Her name is Michelle and she babysits my son occasionally.
She caught the flick this Friday and thought it was great. Not a classic, but fun and it definitely hit home for her. Being a teenager she hasn’t seen as much horror as some, cough, older fans. But love horror she does and she’s smart so I can’t reject her opinion out of hand. Maybe some of the things that seem so tired and stupid to me, still work when it’s still within the first 100 times or so you’ve seen them.
So I’m not sure if it’s a generational thing like music, or an experiential thing like cuisine. However I will give props to the current trend of WB-like horror films for tapping into a vein of interest, that while not my taste, is still valid.
The important thing is that new horror fans are going to the movies everyday. Thanks for reminding me of that Michelle.
