In an interesting turn of events, Variety reports that Steve Miner (producer of the original FRIDAY THE 13TH and director of PART 2 and 3D, along with the forgettable HALLOWEEN: H2O) has signed on to direct the remake of George Romero’s underrated DAY OF THE DEAD.
The original (directed and written by Romero) had a group of military personnel and scientists taking refuge in an underground bunker after the world above them has become overrun with zombies. The remake is being produced by Millennium’s Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Randall Emmett, George Furla and James Dudelson, with Robert Dudelson, M. Dal Walton III, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort exec producing with Paul Mason and Jordan Rush.
“We are very enthusiastic about the marketplace’s continued demand for new and exciting horror pictures, and we are pleased to have Steve helm this,” Lerner said. Wait a minute, he said “new and exciting horror pictures”? Since when does a remake of a previously released film count as new? Granted, there’s new actors, new effects and the like, but jeez, originality is going out the friggin’ window in horror, nowadays!
Speaking of originality (or lack thereof), Millennium and Emmett/Furla are also planning RAMBO IV with Sylvester Stallone. In this case, the “IV” may be only thing keeping this idea on life support…
