ComingSoon.net has a pretty extensive interview with director Marc Forster up today. Forster, who has MONSTER’S BALL and FINDING NEVERLAND on his resume so far is now branching into the psychological thriller arena with STAY.
With Ewan MacGregor, Ryan Gosling and Naomi Watts, the cast is obviously fantastic. Plus the awesome trailer makes this look like one helluva mindf*ck! So let’s listen in for a bit on what the man had to say (be forewarned that Forster is pretty loose lipped about what’s going on in the flick):
CS: How did this script end up on your plate and about how long ago?
Forster: Basically, after David Fincher. He was attached to several projects and didn’t know which one he was going to do. They wanted a director and were looking for someone, and he sort of let go of it and said that they could find someone to do it. That was spring of 2003.
CS: This movie is obviously very different in tone and setting from your last few movies. Can you elaborate a bit on that?
Forster: I just wanted to do something differently and wanted to create something very different. The thing is that within this story, it’s more of an experience than anything else. It was very tricky, because you have to create an experience with the tonal thing, and it’s impossible because you have so many little details, and you want to give as many clues as possible to begin with that we’re not actually in reality and that we’re sort of in an alternate reality. From that point of view, it was just tricky to plan a lot ahead, and then, I wanted to shoot New York in a different way than it’s been shot before and find locations that haven’t really been used so we had to do extensive location research and figure out the visual point of view.
CS: Without giving anything away, the ending explains what we’ve been watching, and some might consider it a bit of a twist. What do you think?
Forster: Usually, I’m not such a big fan of twist endings. I mean, I like them and I don’t. It depends on which case they’re presented to me, but the thing is that I didn’t want to have this movie rest on a twist ending. I really tried to set-up right off the bat that we’re in an alternate reality, so that people really understand that there’s something else going on here. We’re not set in reality, and I also said to the studio that I think it will be a smart idea to market that, because I don’t think people should believe that we are in reality and then suddenly have a twist ending. I think there are so many other things going on that are quite different.
