It’s always neat to hear about folks who overcome personal limitations and succeed. Case in point: Joseph M. Monks. Monks has just finished wrapping his first film for Sight Unseen Pictures called THE BUNKER. What’s interesting to note is that Monks is blind. I’m sure there are those of you who are saying, “How can a blind guy direct a movie?” Well, he did, so take that naysayers! Blinded by diabetic retinopathy, Monks has been working on THE BUNKER as a DTV film for a Tales From The Crypt-style horror anthology called Flowers on the Razorwire, which had been a horror comic book anthology published in the 1990s by his friend Hart D. Fisher. Monks announced on Monday that principal photography on THE BUNKER had wrapped successfully in Miami, days prior to
Hurricane Katrina.
THE BUNKER, the story of a sadistic serial killer who kidnaps the daughter of a U.S. Congressman and which Monks also wrote, will be released next year as the second installment of the Flowers on the Razorwire DVD series. It
will include a 16 page comic book, and while not all details on the book are ready to be revealed, Monks confirmed on his site that both stories will be written by himself, and at least one will be illustrated by long-time collaborator Mike Koneful. Koneful had been an integral part of Monks’ horror anthology, Zacherley’s Midnite Terrors, and who will be half the art team on the upcoming zombie series Gory Lori.
Along with news of principle photography wrapping, Monks was kind enough to send us some pictures from the set. While 2nd unit shooting still needs to be completed in New Jersey, Monks says that the film will be released in October. Not bad for a blind guy.
