It looks like horror has a chance to be recognised by the Academy next year if all goes as planned. The acclaimed director of AMERICAN HISTORY X, Tony Kaye, has signed on to direct REAPER today for M8 Entertainment & Circle of Confusion LLC.
“We’re enormously excited to have Tony Kaye, a filmmaker with incredible vision and talent, join this project. ‘Reaper’ is an ideal vehicle for a director with a strong visual style, and we expect that Tony will bring a whole new dimension to the film, conceptually and commercially.” That’s a direct quote from Chairman of the Board Sammy Lee, who is understandably stoked to have Kaye on board this project.
So what is REAPER all about? Written by Gary Whitta, REAPER tells the story of Virgil, a private investigator who finds himself recruited by the darkly beautiful and mysterious Delia. As he begins to work for Delia, Virgil finds himself suddenly immersed in a surreal underworld, one where the boundaries of life and death – as well as right and wrong -are completely blurred. This unlikely journey also reveals the harrowing answers to the fate of Virgil’s own daughter.
Some say it’s a cross between BLADE RUNNER and SEVEN. No stars are attached to it yet (obviously), but with just that brief synopsis, I think this might be the original thriller/mystery/horror flick we’ve all been waiting for. No more remakes, baby!
