A few months ago, we shared the news that Chloe Grace Moretz would be starring in a sci-fi thriller called Mother/Android, from The Batman's writer/director Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin. Now it has been announced that the Hulu streaming service has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the film and they're planning to release it as a Hulu Original Film sometime in 2021.

Produced by Reeves, Mother/Android marks the feature directorial debut of Tomlin, who also wrote the screenplay. Moretz plays Georgia

who, with her boyfriend Sam, goes on a treacherous journey to escape their country, which is caught in an unexpected war with artificial intelligence. Days away from the arrival of their first child, the couple must face No Man’s Land — a stronghold of the android uprising, in hopes of reaching safety before giving birth.

Sam is played by Algee Smith. Raul Castillo is also in the cast.

When writing the script, Tomlin drew inspiration from the story of his own parents, "a young couple who were determined to save their child amid the dangers of the Romanian Revolution." Tomlin says,

This film is a labor of love and I couldn’t be happier that in these extremely strange times, Mother/Android will be handled by a partner who truly cares. I feel extremely lucky to have Hulu bringing the film to audiences later this year."

Reeves added,

Mattson’s directorial debut is an intimate sci-fi film that is both beautiful and extremely personal, with a powerful, soulful performance from Chloë Moretz. I am incredibly excited that Hulu will be sharing Mother/Android with audiences."

Reeves produced Mother/Android through his company 6th & Idaho. Adam Kassan, Rafi Crohn, Charles Miller, and Miramax's Bill Block produced the film alongside him.

I was sold on Mother/Android as soon as I read that part about Tomlin being inspired by the story of his own parents. I look forward to seeing this sci-fi twist on his parents' reality.
