Despite being the seventh film in a franchise many believe has been running out of steam for a while now, Minions and Monsters is proving to be another box office hit. In just two days, it’s grossed over $25 million, with Deadline revealing it’s not that far off from how Despicable Me 4, which opened in a similar holiday corridor, performed. In my estimates, I predicted about $85 million for the five-day holiday, and I stand by that, although the A-minus CinemaScore isn’t quite as strong as the A grade many other films in the franchise received (only Despicable Me 3 also earned an A-minus).
Supergirl’s box office collapse continues
However, the news isn’t good for the DCU’s Supergirl. While the writing has been on the wall for days now after its abysmal opening, many hoped it would rally in week two. Instead, it grossed just $2.3 million yesterday, which wasn’t all that far off from what Obsession made in third place, with $1.6 million. For the record, Obsession is already on PVOD, so one would have assumed the gap would be much larger.
Supergirl has been at the center of controversy this past week, with many accusing online reporters of being too gleeful about its box office failure. As someone who gave it a bad review, I’ll say this—there’s no glee, at least not on my part. No one wants to see a movie tank, and had Supergirl actually been good, we all would have been pulling for it. The fact is, it was really weak, a run-of-the-mill superhero movie that isn’t even as good as some of the more underwhelming recent Marvel movies. If James Gunn’s new DC wants to succeed, it has to be a lot better. Audiences seem to agree, with them clearly staying away in droves and giving it a poor B-minus CinemaScore.
Can Young Washington overtake Supergirl?
The big wild card this weekend is Angel Studios’ Young Washington, which opens today. Will it be able to overtake Supergirl? The smart money seems to be on yes, although it almost certainly won’t catch Toy Story 5, which continues to perform well. Check back tomorrow for a full box office update.
